In order to obtain a certification in interior design a person must contact their local board of architects and interior designers and apply for the actual certification. However, before getting to this point a person should be well prepared. Being well prepared means having completed high school, completed at least an associate degree in interior design or a 4 year degree and have good communication skills, a sense of balance and proportion and of course a person must be creative. Having these skills and then applying for the actual certification will lead you on your way to a successful career.

The process for obtaining the certification once you go to the website in your area (Board of Architects and Interior Designs) you will be able to download and complete the actual application, you must be at least 21 years of age, you will have a slight fee to pay usually about $50, and you must be able to provide proof of passing the NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) examination along with a copy of your degree. It helps to show that your professional degree came from a college with a program accredited by FIDER (Foundation for Interior Design Research) and NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design).

Employers in this field usually want clients that have a bachelor’s degree in art or interior design. They will often review a portfolio as part of the interview process. This is simply a collection of the designer’s work which may include sketches of plans and photographs of completed work. For beginners, on the job training is key, and this is usually done after you complete your internship. The more you gain experience the more you will receive and complete difficult tasks and this can sometimes take up to three or four years.

As an interior designer you should know how to make and use plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. It is also good to know sales and marketing; how to advertise and sell your products. Then of course you want to study people. Knowledge of people is an essential part of your job. By this, a person should study mental processes and know how to treat emotional and behavioral problems and because you will have clients of all sorts and knowing how to handle them is a major part of how well you sell your ideas and your products. This job also requires a person to be exact in their work whereas errors could cost clients money.

Obtaining a certification is not difficult at all and once obtained you will find yourself working in a field that is very intriguing. As an interior designer you cover so many things with most of them being fun and exciting.

Do you love interior design? Have you always wanted to be your own boss? How about combining the two and starting your own interior design business?

Starting your own interior design business takes work, but the rewards are worth it. You will get the satisfaction of working for yourself. And you will be able to do something you love for a living. Sometimes people get stuck in a job they hate, and it can have a negative influence on their whole life. Why not go after your dreams?

You Don’t Need A Degree
You don’t need to go to school for interior design, although of course it won’t hurt. If you do have a degree or certificate in home design, make sure you put that on any promotional materials you have printed.

Don’t forget the business side of things. Running a business isn’t like launching the space shuttle, but you do need to have the basics down. That means accounting and business math. Sound boring? It won’t be, because it’s all going towards a business you are going to love.

Name Your Business
You can call your business whatever you want. You might want to put your name on it, although some business owners advise against this. Maybe you can come up with a catchy name that states what the business is about.

This helps a lot. People like it when they can tell what a business does as soon as they read the name. They also like businesses that are personalized. So don’t give your interior design business a cold sounding name. Use your creativity. Naming a business can be real fun.

Start Small
You don’t want to go broke, so start out small. Ideally, you won’t have to take out any loans. Banks are hesitant to loan money to start-up companies. They know there are a lot of failures, especially the first year. Of course, your business is not going to fail.

You can advertise for free. How? Easy. Facebook, Twitter and Blogger. You can open accounts on all three of those sites and start advertising your business, and you won’t have to pay a dime.

Show Off Your Success
Most cell phones can take pictures. Use your cell phone to take pictures of a room you have designed. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any customers yet. Take pictures of a room you did in your home or apartment.
People want results. They don’t want to read a bunch of stuff about design. They want to see a sample of your design ability. It’s only fair. So impress people by showing off your best room.

If you want to become an interior designer there are many things that you can do to begin your career. Look for schools around you, work as an intern at a interior deisgn school, and make sure that you have all of the knowledge needed.

When you begin to start your career as an interior designer, you want to check for universites and collegs that are designed for interior design. Make sure that they are accredited as well. Start applying to those schools. Whether you are planning on going local or out of state, make sure you have everything you need to apply. If you have any classes that you have taken previously that you know will benefit you in your career, make sure you add those as well.

When you have received a degree, most schools will make it mandatory that you work as an intern first. It will help if you already have suggested places while in school that you know you can benefit off of. You can also apply to them through your school. You never know, because this can lead you your very first job as an interior designer. Make internships a big part of your list.

Upon graduating, you do want to make sure that you have attained all of the knowledge possible in becoming an interior designer. Companies will not want to hire people that have very few knowledge of what you are trying to do. Sometimes it pays to know people that can get you in the door, but for most people that is not always the case, and they have to make sure they work as hard as possible.

Something else that may be helpful is if you get familiar with your state licensing requirements for interior designers. That will always make you a step ahead of the game. If you have access to the National Council for Interior Design, you will be able to find state by state information.

Becoming an interior designer is not a hard process at all but does take time, as well as commitment. You need to make sure you look for schools and start applying ahead of time, get involved in interships that may help you acheive a job, and have knowledge about what you are doing. All of these will get you on the right path to starting your first career as an interior designer.
